How to DIY a Side Table for FREE

FREE DIY Side Table

It’s Spring! Is anyone else itching for a DIY project? Me too. Time and Money aren’t always your friend when such an itch arises.  However, THIS little project can accommodate any budget in any time frame. Scouts Honor.

Once upon a time, my Hubby and I threw out our dated entertainment center, remember that?  We held a contest to get some help in the furniture arranging/decorating department and have been piecing things together as much as life allows. Life is pretty full right now, we’ve got some exciting things rolling your way soon! AND…we sold my car. Hey, why not do a lot of big-life-things at once right? Sometimes, that’s just how we roll. ANYWAYS,  without further adieu…

I was hunting, er, I mean shopping, 🙂 at Home Goods for some inspiration and accessories when I found this amazing Nicole Miller metal accent table for $60.

It was so great. We had a moment and THEN I decided to improvise one myself…for free. My creative side gets pretty ambitious sometimes.

Later that evening I was staring at my living room, which has been a regular activity since its upheaval. Am I the only one that does this?

My logic is this, if you stare at it long enough, genius will just jump up and bite you! ANYWAYS, I began looking for things that would be the right height for a side table to create a little moment on my wall. I had a chair that I pulled from my office, but he was lonely on that wall all by himself and needed some buddies. And that friends is when I found this:

a cracked water jug that had been re-purposed as a change container chillin’ in our guest room. I know I know. I mean who WOULDN’T be insprired by that?

Just go with me. It just. might. work, but he needed a top. That’s when I dug up this old wooden charger that had :

A. graced my dining room table for the better part of 8 years and

B. seen better days.

But hey, nothing a little spray paint couldn’t fix right?

Spray paint is sort of like Duct Tape in the fact that it fixes everything! Remember when I spray painted my shoes & all the Pumpkins?

Here we go, assume the position,

which basically means protect your hands and look like a Muppet in the process, and spray away.

When spray painting it’s important to stay at least 12 inches away and work in thin layers otherwise you’ll be subject to the dreaded “drip” which there is really no going back from lol.

SO when you put both the water jug, wooden charger and a couple of layers of spray paint together here you have:

A FREE Side Table.

Now, is it the greatest thing in the world? No. But was it free, creative, and a GREAT conversation piece? Totally.

AND if you’re an avid spray painter, you KNOW you can’t stop at just one thing…its sort of like Pringles or watching Netflix.

Remember this lampshade I found at Target a while back? Well, here he is topping a newly spray-painted lamp base also from Target that I scored earlier this year for $5!

Rust-oleum Metallic Finish has proven to be a winner over and over again. I’ve used this $6 can on everything. Literally.  And its still going strong.
Don’t let your budget or lack of time make you feel small in your own home.  Use what’s in your hand and see where it lead you.

Until next time…
