Do you remember how big certain places used to seem when you were a kid? Everything seemed epic! But, have you ever revisited that same place as an adult only to be slightly underwhelmed because it felt much smaller than you remembered?

A couple of years ago we took our niece to Chuck E. Cheese. I hadn’t stepped foot in a Chuck E. Cheese in probably 25 years. As a kid, Chuck E. Cheese seemed like this ginormous place packed with every game imaginable. Then, when you ordered pizza and watched the show, the characters were larger than life. This was the perspective of our niece, but Megan and I looked at each other and said, this place is tiny. It was packed with people, the games are right on top of each other and that stage seems so much smaller than it used to be.

What happened? As we got bigger and older, Chuck E. Cheese got smaller.

Unfortunately, this is what happens in our relationship with God sometimes as we get older. We grow up, become smarter, more logical. But if we’re not careful, we start to become more dependent on ourselves and this big, huge God we believed in as kids, begins to become smaller and smaller and our problems, in turn, become bigger and bigger.

Today, I want to remind you of one simple truth that will help you grow spiritually in your walk with God. That one truth is this:

Our God is big.

In the book of 2nd Kings, there is a powerful story about the prophet Elisha. The King of Aram was waging war against the Israelites (God’s chosen people). And God kept telling Elisha the plans of the Arameans. Because of this, King Aram could not defeat his enemy (the Israelites). Enraged, the King hunted Elisha down and surrounded his home with horses and chariots. When Elisha’s servant peered out the window, he was filled with fear and looked at Elisha saying, “Oh no, what are we going to do?”  What Elisha said and did next is unbelievable.

“Don’t be afraid, “The prophet answered. Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes Lord, so that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” (2 Kings 6:16, NIV)

Wow. I love this story. It reminds me of how big God is and how small the enemy really is. If we could just keep out theology this simple, it would change so much of our perception and experience, wouldn’t it?

As life occurs, sometimes painful circumstances cause us to lose sight of how big our God really is. Fear is a tool our enemy uses to keep us believing that God is small. Have you ever believed statements like these:

  • God isn’t going to answer your prayer.
  • Your future is going to be painful and uncomfortable.
  • Depression, sadness, and worry are your new normal so you might as well get used to it.
  • Your mistakes are unredeemable and unforgivable.

I want to encourage you today to recognize those statements as lies. Remember that God has your back! Even when life is hard, painful, or uncomfortable, you have a God that is surrounding and protecting you.

He offers you a peace that transcends all understanding. If we could just stop believing the lies and open our eyes and heart to the bigness of God again, it would change everything. He is so much bigger than your circumstance. He has the power to not only change your circumstance but provide you with hope for an amazing life and future with Him. We need to stop trying so hard to fix everything on our own (of which I am the worst offender) and remember to,

“fix our eyes on Jesus, the author, and finisher of our faith.” (Heb. 12:2)

Because “He who began a good work in you will carry it out to completion.” (Phil. 1:6)

Start praying bold, and faithful prayers again! Start praying like God is bigger, so much bigger than your enemy, your fear and your circumstance.  Because He is.

This week, here’s what we’re praying for you and we’re going to ask you to pray it over us too, deal?

“Lord, open our eyes so we can see how truly surrounded we are, not by the enemy or the loud fear that threatens but open our eyes to your love, power, and presence which is surrounding us right now.”

Your life is not small and neither is your God.

Until next time friend,

Chris
