8 Little Changes to Help you Love your Home Again

8 Little Changes to help you love your home again-5 min read

We were nomadic for approximately 24 months.  It’s amazing what happens to your psyche when your roots have no place to permanently sink and your belongings are stowed away in your sister’s basement.  Still, in each place our feet landed, we were able to make our “house” a home and we’ve been able to do it on a slim budget. And today, we’re pulling back the curtain.

I mean…we would if we had curtains, but you get the idea.

Chris and I embarked on an adventure. And while this adventure took much longer than anticipated, because that is real life, God has taught us, freed us, and drew us closer to Himself in a way I’m 90% confident we couldn’t have been before.

The Lord has a way of going, “Oh you think we’re doing this…but we’re actually going to do this. And I’m going to remind you of my kindness and love and provision in the process.”

There’s something about His loving sovereignty that won’t release you into your “next step” until He knows you are ready. He is a God of process and not because He likes dangling His sovereignty like a carrot in front of your face, but because He wants our identity in place so we have the character to carry what He alone knows lies ahead.

And He has this crazy little way of using the practical things in our life to accomplish this.

In 2017, we sold our house in… 2 days. Had an estate sale. Were very blessed to move into a rental condo (here’s what we did to that space) for 5 months and then last fall had a chance to rent “the lake house,” the second home of a dear and generous friend from church. Then, we were there the majority of the time with the exception of a few brief stints in my in-law’s basement.

God bless family.

Throughout this process, we planned, saved and worked like crazy in preparation to move into our current home which we adore; a home that finally feels like us.

But while we were in between, we relished little modifications to our everyday things making each place we’ve laid our head feel more like “ours.”

No matter what your current living situation is, your 4 walls don’t have to make you feel small.  Here are 8 little changes we personally use to help you love your home again.

1. Put everyday objects in glass containers

Last year when we had to stage our home, I went all Pinterest-y on my pantry. My favorite thing?  Getting rid of all the plastic bags and putting nearly e’rything into glass jars. There’s something about seeing chia seeds in a canning jar with a chalkboard label that makes you feel like you have your life together.

Don’t stop in the pantry. EVERYTHING looks better in a glass jar: q-tips, cotton balls, colored pencils, coffee, all of it. And you can TOTALLY “up-cycle” condiment jars too. Look at you saving the environment AND having an organized home.

2. Grocery store flowers

Fresh flowers make any space better. Period. But they can add up. I’m a big fan of grabbing a bunch from the grocery store and dividing the bouquet into glass bottles all over the house.  And you know what’s even less expensive and lasts for MONTHS? Greenery! I bought a $4 bouquet of greenery at the grocery store 2 months ago and it’s still going strong. WTG Kroger.

And if you’re looking for something more permanent, I picked up this little succulent from Trader Joes for $2.99!  He’s adorable. His name is Enrique. He can be your hero baby. And hopefully you got that reference, if not, go buy your own Enrique and keep reading.

3. Add funny artwork to your bathroom

I like a room with a sense of humor.  And there’s no place to take you and yours less seriously than the bathroom.  Now you could pick up a cute little sign like this OR you could just download a printable like this one from Haley at The Mountain View Cottage and make your own! For FREE!  And while you’re printing all the things, be sure to check out the printables we’ve made you for your home AND for your next date-night...go on, click it, you know you’re curious.

4. Declutter

Throw out papers, have a drop zone and actually keep it organized

Drop zones are great until they’re not.  Put a few key things in place to keep your drop zone from turning into a hot pile o’ stuff. My go-to’s of choice, Key hooks, a small dish for wallets, paper trays, a letter bin or shelf for outgoing mail, and a garbage can to quickly edit your junk mail. Bonus points if you channel your inner Joanna & hang a Magnolia Market sign.

5.  Organize your closet

I am in no way shape or form an expert on this. But I am an expert in getting dressed and feeling put together faster. Here’s a WAY back throwback post to show you what I mean.

6. Upgrade your lighting

I am currently in the THICK of it with lighting.  I’m talking serious online shopping and googling all the coupon codes. There are some AWESOME options online!  And you know what’s surprised me most? Amazon. I know I shouldn’t be so shocked but seriously, look at this guy! If you have any lighting favorites send them my way!

7. Get family photos off your phone and onto your wall

We’re big fans of Easy Canvas Prints. Their quality is great and you cannot beat their prices. And nope, not a sponsored post, just a legitimate referral. 😉

8. Deal with all your ugly chords

Charging things is a necessity. Having to stare at the ugly cords that charge your things? Optional. Check out all the fancy chord keeping options here. OR…now this is really fancy, use a large binder clip to secure said cords to the back of your table or desk.

You’ll spend $6.99 and never have to see your cord again. Everybody wins!

See, wasn’t that painless? 8 little changes you can make this week to help you LOVE your home again.  Instead of, you know, resenting it and being frustrated by it. Choose option A man. Choose option A.

We’re ALWAYS looking for new tips! What little changes do you make that help you love your home again?

Until next time,

Meg

  • Um, you caught me in the middle of an entire house purging, closets and all! I love this. Oh, and we are also updating our light fixtures. They aren’t quite as cool as the one you posted but they at least WORK! Now that is a bonus! Thanks Meg, I’m in on the cord thing!

    • Woo Hoo for working light fixtures!!! You can see again. Yay! Yes, definitely check out the cord thing, it’s such a little stress reliever.

  • 😂😂😂 I went to Amazon to look at the light and flipped through saying oh, I like that, oh I like that, oh I like that, oh, two, I really like that. Then realized that I had been talked my to myself out loud and realized how excited I got at Two of the lamps and then couldn’t stop laughing!! Thank you for giving me a good laugh!!

  • This is a great list! I can vouch for the grocery store flowers – been doing that for about a year and a half now and it’s amazing how happy they make me (and visitors). Also, I just won a “Enrique” door prize at a women’s ministry event! Thanks for the cute name idea – that makes it even more fun! Here’s hoping that I can keep him alive!

    • Yay for twinning Enriques! lol Good luck with him and be encouraged, I am VERY good at killing plants and that little guy is still going strong 😉 So glad you stopped by Alyson! I just joined your email list, love all your hand-lettering. Just beautiful!

  • Great tips. Every time we move we tackle the lighting, because it is never bright enough. I don’t know how many lights we have added to houses or lighting fixtures we have changed to get more light.

  • These are fabulous ideas, Meg! Thanks for sharing them. As I envisioned things in glass jars, your words rang true in my heart. Things definitely look better in them! And the idea of adding funny artwork (especially that SIGN) to my bathroom? Pure gold right there. 🙂

I’m visiting from Holley Gerth’s place today!

    • Oh, Thanks Jeanne! I’m so glad you stopped by! Hope you get some funny artwork to make you smile soon! 🙂
