I am notorious for choosing the wrong paint color. And there is no better example of my notoriety than when we redid our kitchen and dining room 4 years ago. You know before we sold our home and 70% of our belongings 😀 but that’s another story.
There I sat.
11:30pm.
Folding chair.
In my mess of a reno kitchen.
Intimidated by tiny paint chips
What I THOUGHT was going to be the world’s most perfect wall color would’ve, in fact,
reminded any sane person of “1970’s appliance avocado.”
It was dark time.
Then next morning Chris and I headed to Benjamin Moore with our cabinet door, a host of pictures and our tails between our legs. I had succumbed (*deep breath*) to the help of an expert.
(Did you just hear my inner perfectionist die a small death?)
Within approximately 4 ½ min she declared “Silver Fox” to be our knight in paint canned shining armor and we were on our way.
I kid you not, 4 ½ min. It took me weeks to pick the WRONG color let alone the right one. I could’ve saved myself a lot of time and worry by going to the expert first.
How many times do we do that in actual life? You know, beyond paint colors.
And Christians? We’re the worst at this.
You know the thought pattern, “ I know Jesus. I can do all things. Therefore I shouldn’t feel (fill in the blank.)”
Not feeling “enough” is probably the lie I battle most frequently. And because it can surface in multiple ways, sometimes it takes me a hot minute…or 12 to recognize, “Oh, that’s a lie.”
Our new-found identity in Christ can cause us to feel self-sufficient when we forget one little detail:
We aren’t enough. But His power at work within us is more than enough.
People frequently misquote Philippians 4:19 declaring, “I can do all things!”
Well yes, yes you can, but don’t forget the rest of the words that change E’RYTHING about that verse…“through Christ who gives me strength.” The AMP actually says, ” I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency.” Love that.
Did you happen to see The Shack? There are many scenes that are a must. This is one of them:
“You’re imagining a future without me and that future does not exist.”
Doesn’t that just set your soul at ease?
You weren’t made to be self-sufficient. If God has given you a dream, a goal, or just a desire to get through your sink full of dishes, you don’t have to go it alone. In fact, you never have to flounder in your own strength ever again if you choose. His power at work within you can accomplish infinitely and abundantly more than you can ask, think, or conjure up in your brain.
And because His perspective is so much wider than ours could ever be, His continual presence draws us to this truth:
the end result isn’t the point, the journey is.
I’m a visual person. If I’m going to remember something it needs to be in front of my eyes on a regular basis.
So there’s 2 nuggets of truth I’d like us to tattoo on our forearms.
Too much? Juuuuust checking to see if you’re paying attention 😉
How about I give you 2 lock screens for your phone instead. That seems much less extreme for 1pm on a Thursday or whenever your eyes are landing on this.
2 Truths. 2 Promises you can lean on. And they happen to be rooted in Scripture.
Click on them. Save them to your camera roll. And use them as your lock screen or wall paper.
Equipping your No Small Life to walk in truth in SO important to us that we even made you presents. 😉
There’s a lot of hope for a bright future. Don’t forfeit it up by walking in obedience to fear.
Remember who you are.
Remember whose you are.
Your life is not small.
You’re never alone.
You are found in Him.
Until next time,
Meg
Hey Meg! It’s nice to meet you for the first time via Holley’s place. I LOVE the Shack. Despite all the back and forth from Christians, it really tackles tough issues with beauty…and the imagery, yes, awesome! I hate that women deal with constant “not enough,” the story of my life and the lives of many friends. I’m glad your nipping that one in the bud this week. Anyway, cut yourself some slack…choosing paint is a grueling task 😉 I bet it looks beautiful!
Hi Meg! I’m so glad you stopped by, I’ve just loved discovering your blog 🙂 I agree, The Shack left me with some imagery I’m so glad I can’t shake. Thanks for your sweet encouragement!
I agree – it’s about the journey! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks so much! Thanks for stopping by, loved finding your blog 🙂
Beautiful encouragement here, Megan. Such insight into “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
And I had no idea they’d made a movie of “The Shack.” Will have to check that out.
Thank you so much Betsy! 🙂 I know there was some controversy surrounding “The Shack,” but it will leave you with some word pictures that make such an impact.
Enjoyed your post today…funny, I just wrote today about Brain Fog, Truth & Promises on my site. We all need reminders, huh? Thanks for reminding me again that I’m never alone. What a blessing~ I am your neighbor and came here from Coffee with Holley 🙂 Blessings~

Such true words! Thanks for stopping by Angie 🙂 I just checked out your latest post on grilled veggies, YUM!!!
Love these! I feel like I’m not enough way too often, so this was necessary to read.
You’re not alone in dealing with that lie Sarah. I hate that it’s so much easier to believe that than the truth don’t you?! Thank you for always stopping by and for your sweet words. You are such an encouragement to me! 🙂
